Astrological Aspects

Aspects are the geometric angles between planets in a chart — the angles that describe how planetary energies interact, conflict, support, and transform each other. Understanding aspects is essential to reading any birth chart, transit, or synastry comparison.

The 5 major aspects

In natal charts

Natal aspects describe the ongoing relationship between two planetary functions throughout a person's life — areas of natural talent (trines), persistent challenge (squares), and creative tension requiring integration (oppositions).

In transits

Transiting aspects occur when a moving planet forms an angle with a natal planet. They describe current planetary influences: windows of opportunity (sextiles, trines), periods of challenge and growth (squares), and major restructuring (oppositions).

In synastry

Synastry aspects describe how one person's planetary energies interact with another's. Conjunctions merge functions; trines create easy mutual support; squares create productive friction; oppositions create the polarity of intense attraction and growth.

Aspect orbs reference

An “orb” is the allowable degree of separation from exactness — within which an aspect is considered active. Tighter orbs indicate stronger aspects.
