Solar Return
A chart for the exact moment the Sun returns to its natal degree each year, describing that year's central themes and energy.
Meaning
A Solar Return is a horoscope calculated for the precise moment each year when the transiting Sun returns to the exact degree and minute it occupied at birth — occurring within two days before or after the birthday. The technique is ancient: Vettius Valens (Anthology, c. 175 CE) used annual return charts as a standard predictive tool to assess the general fortune and tenor of the year ahead. Arabic astrologers — notably Mashallah and Abu Ma'shar — developed the annual revolution (tahwil al-sinin) extensively alongside primary directions and transits. William Lilly (Christian Astrology, 1647) used Solar Return charts as one of several predictive methods, especially noting the placement of the return Ascendant relative to the natal chart. The systematic modern treatment derives primarily from Alexandre Volguine (Technique of Solar Returns, 1937; English translation 1977) and Mary Shea (Planets in Solar Returns, 1990). To interpret a Solar Return: first examine the return Ascendant sign, which sets the year's general approach and energy; then overlay return chart planets onto the natal chart to identify which natal houses are most activated; note any return planet conjunct a natal planet within 2° as a particularly charged activation; and finally read the return Moon's sign and house for the year's emotional theme. The Solar Return may be cast for the birthplace (traditional) or for wherever the native actually is on their birthday — the latter is the modern relocation variant, which Jim Lewis connected to his astrocartography principles.
Why it matters
Your Solar Return chart is a personalized forecast for the coming year — it shows where your energy concentrates and what themes will define the next twelve months.
