Understanding planets in houses
Your natal chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment of your birth — divided into 12 sections called houses, each corresponding to a different sphere of life. Planets in those houses tell the story of how cosmic energies show up in your everyday experience.
The Sun shows where your sense of identity and vitality naturally shines. The Moon reveals your emotional instincts and what makes you feel secure. Venus points to your relationship style, what you find beautiful, and how you attract and are attracted.
Reading your planets in houses together — not just individually — creates the full picture. A Sun in the 7th house person expresses themselves through relationships; pair that with a Moon in the 4th, and you get someone who needs deep domestic security to feel confident enough to show up in partnerships.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to have a planet in a house?
In your natal chart, the sky is divided into 12 houses that each represent a different area of life: personality, finances, communication, home, creativity, health, partnerships, transformation, philosophy, career, friendships, and spirituality. A planet in a house means that planet's energy operates strongly through that life domain. If you have the Sun in the 10th house, for example, your sense of identity and ego expression is closely tied to career and public reputation.
How do I know which house my planets are in?
Your planetary house placements require your exact birth time — not just your birth date. The houses are calculated based on the precise degree of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth (your Ascendant or rising sign). Enter your birth date, time, and location into the free birth chart tool to find all your placements.
Which house placement is most important?
All house placements matter, but certain ones carry more weight. Planets in the 1st house (identity), 4th house (foundations), 7th house (relationships), and 10th house (career) — the four angular houses — tend to express strongly and visibly in a person's life. The Sun, Moon, and Rising placements are typically considered the core triad.
What if I have no planets in a house?
Empty houses are common — most charts have several. An empty house doesn't mean that area of life is unimportant or inactive. The house's ruling planet (the planet that rules the zodiac sign on the house cusp) shows where the house's energy is being expressed. Transiting planets also activate empty houses throughout your life.
Do planets in houses change over time?
Your natal placements — the planets' positions at birth — are permanent. However, transiting planets move through each of your houses continuously, temporarily activating those themes. When Saturn transits your 7th house, for example, relationships come under review and restructuring regardless of what's in your natal 7th house.
