What is synastry?
Synastry is the astrological practice of comparing two birth charts to understand relationship dynamics. When you overlay two charts, each person's planets fall in specific positions relative to the other's — and the angles between them (called aspects) reveal the quality of the connection: where there is natural harmony, where there is creative friction, and where growth might require intentional work.
This calculator uses two approaches as entry points: Life Path numerology compares the core life-theme numbers derived from your birth dates, and elemental compatibility compares your sun sign elements and modalities. Both give useful signals. A full synastry reading — mapping Venus to Venus, Moon to Moon, Mars to Saturn, and so on across both complete charts — goes significantly deeper.

What is synastry in astrology?
Synastry is the branch of astrology that studies relationships by comparing two people's natal charts. When you overlay two birth charts, you can see how one person's planets interact with the other's — conjunctions, oppositions, trines, and squares between planets reveal the dynamics of attraction, tension, support, and challenge in the relationship. This calculator gives you a top-of-funnel snapshot using life path numerology and elemental compatibility; a full synastry reading goes much deeper.
What is a Life Path number and how does it affect compatibility?
Your Life Path number is calculated by reducing your full birth date (day + month + year) to a single digit, or one of the master numbers 11, 22, or 33. It is considered the central theme of your life — your natural strengths, challenges, and direction. In numerological compatibility, Life Path numbers reveal how two people's core life orientations interact: whether they naturally complement, challenge, or mirror each other. It is one indicator among many and works best alongside full astrological synastry.
What does elemental compatibility mean in astrology?
The twelve zodiac signs are divided among four elements — Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. Signs of the same element tend to understand each other intuitively. Complementary elements (Fire + Air, Earth + Water) create natural support. Challenging element pairings (Fire + Water, Air + Earth) can create friction but also growth. Elemental compatibility is a broad indicator — individual birth charts, rising signs, moon signs, and planet placements provide a much more nuanced picture.
What is the difference between synastry and a composite chart?
Synastry overlays two natal charts to see how each person's planets interact with the other's — it reveals the dynamic between two individual people. A composite chart takes the midpoints of both people's planets to create a single 'relationship chart' that describes the relationship itself as an entity. Both are used in astrological relationship analysis and give complementary perspectives.
Can compatibility calculators predict if a relationship will work?
No compatibility calculator — numerological, elemental, or otherwise — can predict whether a relationship will succeed. Relationship success depends on communication, values alignment, timing, personal growth, and countless factors that astrology and numerology cannot capture. What these tools can offer is a framework for understanding natural dynamics, potential areas of tension, and complementary strengths — not a verdict.
What is a synastry aspect?
A synastry aspect is a geometric angle between one person's planet and another's — measured in degrees of the zodiac. The major aspects are conjunction (0°, blending), opposition (180°, polarity), trine (120°, ease), square (90°, tension/growth), and sextile (60°, opportunity). When Person A's Venus trines Person B's Jupiter, for example, it suggests natural warmth and generosity in how they affect each other. A full synastry reading maps all these aspects across both charts.
